What Is Life Between Lives Regression?

Life Between Lives regression - often shortened to LBL - is a deeper form of regression that goes beyond individual past lives into what practitioners describe as the 'between' state. It's the work Michael Newton developed and wrote about in Journey of Souls, and it's typically done after at least one or more past life sessions.

LBL sessions are longer, more involved, and not for everyone right away. They're a particular kind of experience for people who are genuinely curious about what happens between incarnations - or, if you prefer, what your subconscious produces when you ask that question in a deeply relaxed state.

If you're new to regression entirely, I'd suggest starting with the Start Here page first.

Understanding Life Between Lives Regression

What the 'between lives' state refers to

In Newton's framework, the between-lives state is what happens to the soul after one life ends and before the next begins. Clients in LBL sessions describe meetings with spirit guides, councils of wiser beings, soul groups of familiar companions, and a review of the life just ended. Sometimes there's a sense of planning what's coming next.

Whether all of this is literal or symbolic is exactly the question you'd expect it to be. I hold both possibilities open. What's striking is how consistent the experiences tend to be across very different clients - people who haven't read Newton and don't know what to expect often report the same kinds of content.

How LBL differs from a standard past life regression

A standard past life session explores one or more specific lives. An LBL session uses the ending of a past life as a bridge - we follow the client past the moment of death in that life and into what comes next. That part of the session is where the real work of LBL begins.

This means LBL sessions are longer (usually 3 to 5 hours for a full LBL, compared to 90 to 120 minutes for standard regression), require more preparation, and generally benefit from having done some spiritual and past life regression work first so you're already familiar with the relaxed state.

Who LBL work tends to suit

LBL is usually best for people who are already familiar with regression work and who come with specific soul-level questions: Why am I here in this life? What am I meant to be working on? Why do certain relationships feel so charged? It's less suited to someone looking for a quick experiential taste.

It's also demanding - both because of the length and because the content can be emotionally significant. Most practitioners recommend spacing LBL sessions out and allowing time for integration afterwards.

Is LBL for you?

If you've already done past life work and feel ready to go deeper, LBL may be the natural next step. If you're brand new to regression, I'd gently suggest starting somewhere lighter. There's no rush.

These sessions are a complementary wellness practice, not medical or psychological treatment. If you're working through a clinical concern, please also speak to your GP. A free consultation is a good way to figure out if LBL is right for you, or whether a different starting point would suit you better.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's usually not recommended. The length and depth of LBL work best when you already know how you respond to hypnosis and are comfortable in the relaxed state. I typically suggest at least one past life session first.

Typically 3 to 5 hours in total. Some practitioners split it over two sessions. The how many sessions will I need? page has more on session planning.

No. LBL is a structured hypnosis process that happens while you stay in your body. Clients describe the experience as vivid and sometimes transcendent, but it's not the same as out-of-body work.

Your experience is your experience. Some clients have content that closely matches Newton's descriptions, others have something different. We don't try to force it into a framework.

I offer LBL-informed work but would discuss your readiness in a consultation first. LBL isn't a good match for everyone and I'd rather say so honestly than rush someone into it.
