Michael Newton's Approach to Past Life Regression

Michael Newton was an American hypnotherapist who, starting in the 1960s and 70s, developed one of the most influential methods in past life regression work. He's best known for Journey of Souls, a book in which he described thousands of client sessions and mapped what he called the 'between-lives' state - what happens to the soul between incarnations.

Whether or not you take his framework literally, his approach has shaped how much of modern regression work is done. This page is a gentle introduction to his method, his legacy, and how it influences sessions today.

If you're curious about regression more broadly, the about regressive hypnotherapy page is a good starting point.

Understanding Michael Newton's Legacy

Who Michael Newton was

Newton was trained as a traditional counsellor and hypnotherapist. He started out sceptical of past life work and only moved toward it gradually, after clients began spontaneously reporting past life experiences in sessions he had meant to be about present-day issues.

Over several decades he worked with thousands of clients and documented what he found. What made his approach distinctive was his willingness to keep asking questions past the end of a past life - into what he called the 'interlife' or 'between-lives' state.

What he discovered - or reported

In his books, Newton describes a surprisingly consistent set of experiences reported by very different clients: meetings with spirit guides, 'councils of elders', soul groups, life reviews, and the planning of a next life. Whether this is literal metaphysics or a shared mythology the subconscious produces in certain states is exactly the kind of thing honest practitioners debate.

What's clear is that his framework gave thousands of people a way to make sense of experiences that were otherwise hard to describe. It opened the door to a kind of regression work that goes beyond individual past lives and into something more archetypal.

How his approach influences modern sessions

Newton's methodology - gentle, non-leading, structured, deeply patient - is now the backbone of most serious regression training worldwide, including the training many UK practitioners do. The Newton Institute, which he founded, certifies practitioners in his specific method (Life Between Lives hypnotherapy, or LBL).

Even practitioners who don't formally train in LBL usually draw on his approach in some way. The emphasis on letting the subconscious lead, on asking open questions, and on not suggesting content - all of that traces back to his work. It's closely related to spiritual and past life regression work today.

If you want to explore his approach

Reading Journey of Souls or Destiny of Souls is a good starting point if you want to understand the framework intellectually. For an experiential taste, a standard past life regression session will use many of the same techniques, even if it doesn't reach the full between-lives state.

These sessions are a complementary wellness practice, not medical or psychological treatment. If you're working through a clinical concern, please also speak to your GP. A free consultation is a good place to explore whether this kind of work suits you.

Frequently Asked Questions

My approach is influenced by his work, like most serious regression training. I use gentle, non-leading questions and let the subconscious lead, which is the core of his methodology.

Yes. A standard past life regression explores one or more past lives. A full LBL session goes further, into the state between lives. LBL sessions are usually longer and best approached after some past life work.

No. Many clients find his work intellectually interesting but treat the actual experience as symbolic. You can approach it however feels right to you.

They're useful for context but I'd avoid reading them right before your own session - it can set expectations that make your own experience feel flat by comparison.

Not usually. It's generally better to do one or more past life sessions first, before attempting the deeper between-lives work. We can talk through whether you're ready in a consultation.
